Discovery Flight

Smiling young pilot wearing headset inside a small airplane cockpit.

A discovery flight, also known as an introductory flight, is a short flight that gives people the opportunity to learn about flying and become familiar with an airplane, airport, and flying environment. Discovery flights are often a first step towards earning a pilot's license. During a discovery flight, participants are assigned to a certified flight instructor who guides them through the process of safely flying an aircraft. The flight typically includes the following activities:

  • Preflight inspection: Participants perform a preflight inspection with the instructor
  • Safety walk: Participants and the instructor take a safety walk around the aircraft to get a closer look and ask questions
  • Flight: The instructor explains the flight plan, reviews the weather, and then allows the participant to fly for most of the flight while monitoring proper techniques

Discovery flights are typically around 60 minutes, but participants should plan to be at the airport for 1.5 to 2 hours. Flight time from a discovery flight can be entered into a temporary logbook and may count towards the 40-hour FAA training requirement for those who continue training. The cost of a 1 hour discovery flight with the Certified Flight Instructor and Aircraft are as follows: Cessna 150L N1679Q (200 pound weight limit) $192.00, Piper Cherokee 160 N5393W $241.50, and Cessna 172N N4948G $269.00.
